Unexpected Departure Behind the Scenes
In a surprising turn of events for the upcoming NBC sitcom Newlyweds, showrunner Gail Lerner has announced that she was let go from the project just weeks before its scheduled debut.
On Friday, October 9, Lerner took to Instagram to share the news with her followers. She expressed deep pride in the series, which she developed alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, stating, “Here’s the good news: I couldn’t be more proud of the new sitcom Newlyweds that I created with the singular Jamie Lee Curtis. Premieres 10/23!”
‘Creative Differences’ Cited
Despite her excitement for the premiere, Lerner revealed the unfortunate circumstances of her exit: “Here’s the bad news: I got fired off it today. The reason I’ve been given is ‘creative differences.’ The cloudy part: I’m so sad to be separated from the most joyous TV experience of my life. The cast, crew, and writers are unparalleled.”
Lerner maintained a professional tone, offering well wishes to the production despite the abrupt end to her involvement.
About the Upcoming Series
The sitcom, which is set to premiere on Friday, October 23, immediately following Reba McEntire’s Happy’s Place, tells the story of a couple who find love later in life. The plot centers on a free-spirited woman and a reserved professor who decide to marry impulsively following a brief romance.
The stars of the show, Téa Leoni and Tim Daly, are well-known to television audiences. Prior to this project, Leoni was recognized for her role in The Naked Truth, while Daly starred in Wings. The couple, who famously played love interests on Madam Secretary, took their relationship off-screen and married in 2025.
Reflecting on their connection, Daly recently shared his admiration for his wife: “I mean, she looked at me, and she saw me. She just saw right into me, and it scared the hell out of me, actually, because all my defenses and walls came crashing down. And there I was vulnerable and caught on her tractor beam. I can’t even understand. I’m crazy about her. It’s wild.”
