Streisand Takes a Stand Against Trump's Demands
Legendary entertainer Barbra Streisand has publicly denounced former President Donald Trump, citing his “unchecked ego” as the driving force behind recent threats to block renovation plans for the Kennedy Center unless his name is prominently featured on the building. In a statement released on her website, the 84-year-old icon described the situation as “galling and painful to witness.”
Streisand highlighted the inconsistency in the center's sudden closure, noting, “Now, a thoroughly defeated Trump has announced that the Kennedy Center is being closed for what the completely stacked board describes as a major renovation. Oddly, when Trump’s name was still on the building, there was no discussion of closing it!”
The Conflict Over Memorialization
The dispute centers on Trump's recent social media assertion that he would only support necessary construction and reconstruction efforts if his name was officially added to the institution. He claimed that the closure is a safety measure, though he linked the continuation of the project to a favorable court ruling regarding the name change.
Streisand expressed her personal connection to the venue, stating:
“I was deeply honored to be included in the 31st annual class of Kennedy Center Honorees. For me, and for so many artists, that honor represented something larger than a career recognition. It represented a belief in the importance of art to the life of a democracy. That is why what is happening to the Kennedy Center is so galling and painful to witness.”
Legal and Public Backlash
According to information from the Associated Press, recent legal rulings have clarified that officials cannot simply install memorials for Trump or other figures at the Kennedy Center without explicit authorization from Congress.
The controversy has drawn criticism from members of the Kennedy family as well. Maria Shriver previously took to social media to challenge the former president's motives, writing:
“Adding your name to a memorial already named in honor of a great man doesn’t make you a great man. Quite the contrary. Putting your name on top of someone else’s doesn’t mean that people will speak of you in the same breath as the other man.”
JFK’s grandson, Jack Schlossberg, has also voiced strong opposition to the attempts to alter the branding of the historic memorial, marking a significant pushback from those associated with the Kennedy legacy.
