Production Changes in Philadelphia
Ed Sheeran’s "Loop Tour" saw a significant departure from its usual format during a recent performance at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Fans noted that the stage setup omitted the familiar "B-stage," an area typically used by the singer to perform fan-requested tracks. As of the time of the event, no audience requests were incorporated into the setlist.
Additionally, the concert schedule saw a major adjustment, with the show beginning at 8 p.m. ET instead of the customary 5:30 p.m. This shift followed the decision of supporting acts Finneas and Lukas Graham to withdraw from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore.
The Macklemore Departure
The tour has been marred by a week of intense controversy following the removal of Macklemore as a support act. Reports indicate that Sheeran faced mounting pressure from tour promoters and venue stakeholders, including New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, regarding Macklemore's participation in upcoming shows. Macklemore was officially removed from the lineup on Monday, September 14.
In a statement regarding the decision, Macklemore wrote:
«Ed Sheeran and his team have made the decision to remove me from the Loop Tour. I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim. We have careers, money, opportunities, safety and audiences around the world. Whatever consequences any of us face for what we say, we get to go home to our families.»
The hip-hop artist further explained that his comments regarding Palestine and the display of the Palestinian flag were cited as the primary points of contention. While noting that the disagreement was painful, Macklemore expressed hope for the future of his thirteen-year friendship with Sheeran.
Sheeran’s Response and Future Appearances
Sheeran broke his silence on the matter shortly after, denying that he had personally pushed for the removal of the rapper. "I spoke with the venues at length all week to try and build a bridge. … I have spent this week trying to build bridges, to find a solution and unfortunately, was unable to do so," Sheeran stated.
During the Philadelphia concert, Sheeran took a moment to address the audience directly about the week’s events:
«This week, the criticism was about something much more important, and I’ve had to take [it in] and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I’m so so sorry. I’m listening and learning. I do not know enough [about the conflict].»
The singer described himself as being caught in the middle of a complex and passionate debate, condemning both the violence that began on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent loss of life in Gaza. Sheeran is currently scheduled to continue his tour at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, later this month.
