Tragedy Strikes During Season Opener

The college football community is mourning the loss of MicahJo Barnett, a 20-year-old running back at William Jewell College, who passed away following a sudden medical emergency. The incident occurred on Saturday, August 29, during the school’s season-opening Division II matchup against Fort Lewis College at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri.

The tragedy unfolded shortly after Barnett scored a touchdown with roughly five minutes remaining in the first quarter, which had put his team ahead 7-0. Shortly after the score, he suffered a medical episode while on the sidelines.

Immediate Response and Hospitalization

According to Liberty Police Captain Nathan Mulch, medical personnel were already stationed at the stadium, as is standard practice for all William Jewell College athletic events. Despite receiving immediate attention on the sidelines for several minutes, Barnett was transported to a local medical facility, where he was ultimately pronounced dead.

In the wake of the event, the game was initially paused before being officially cancelled. A vigil was held on the university campus later that Saturday to honor the student-athlete.

I want to say that we appreciate the response that we’ve received from the sheriff’s office, the police department, the EMS department, our school, the physician for the team. Everybody responded so quickly, so well.»
