The Suspension Explained

Viewers of Dancing With the Stars will notice a change in the lineup for season 35’s upcoming Dedication Night. Professional dancer Val Chmerkovskiy will be absent from the episode, with Alan Bersten stepping in to perform alongside Jenna Dewan. This temporary departure follows a period of intense off-screen tension that ultimately resulted in a one-week suspension for Chmerkovskiy.

The Root of the Conflict

The situation escalated after judge Carrie Ann Inaba critiqued a samba performance by Jenna Johnson and her partner, Harry Shum Jr., during Super Bowl Night. Inaba identified an illegal lift, which is prohibited under the show's rules.

Explaining the technicality, Inaba noted, «A lift is — I just need to say it — any movement during which one of the dancers has both feet off the floor at the same time with the assistance or support of their partner».

Social Media Fallout

Following the critique, Chmerkovskiy defended his wife on social media. His actions, which included a post referencing the infamous 2022 Oscars incident involving Will Smith and Chris Rock, drew immediate backlash. Inaba responded publicly to the jab, leading to an investigation by BBC Studios and Chmerkovskiy’s subsequent suspension.

In a statement regarding the disciplinary action, producers emphasized the show's core principles: «The well-being of everyone who works on Dancing With the Stars is non-negotiable. Val’s social media post was inappropriate and does not reflect the values or standards expected of anyone connected with the show».

Public Apologies and Moving Forward

Chmerkovskiy has since issued a formal apology to Inaba and the audience, acknowledging that his attempt to defend his wife was handled poorly. «In a moment where my instinct was to defend my wife, I made a poor decision to reference a meme... which was genuinely never my intention», he shared via Instagram. He also expressed regret for involving Inaba in his lapse in judgment.

While Chmerkovskiy intends to cheer on his colleagues from home, other participants have called for a return to the show's core spirit. Harry Shum Jr. posted a reminder to his followers, stating, «Reminder that this is a dance show. It is supposed to be joyous. People are suffering in the world already, so let’s celebrate each other with more love».
