Clarifying the Schedule

President Donald Trump has publicly addressed and refuted reports alleging that he intends to skip the 25th-anniversary memorial at Ground Zero in New York City because he was not permitted to deliver a speech. The ceremony commemorates the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, the President stated:

«The New York Times made up a story that on September 11th, I’m not going to the World Trade Center, in New York City, because they won’t let me make a speech, and I’m going to the Pentagon in D.C., because I’m a featured speaker. This is more Corrupt News; I’ve been to New York many times over the years, and no one ever speaks, it’s a solemn ceremony!»

He further added that he would prefer not to speak, noting that the day should be focused on remembering the victims and their families.

Context Behind the Memorial Plans

The controversy emerged following a report suggesting that Trump's team had inquired about the possibility of him speaking at the Ground Zero site. According to reports, officials in New York have maintained a policy since 2012 that bans politicians from speaking at the site to ensure the event remains strictly nonpartisan.

The President is currently expected to attend the commemorative ceremony held at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Beyond the official program, logistics appear to play a role in the decision-making process. Sources indicate that the President has a scheduled trip to his golf course in Doonbeg, Ireland, the following day. Departing from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland is reportedly more convenient than navigating airports in the New York area.

Official Response and Historical Attendance

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly reaffirmed the administration's commitment to honoring the victims and first responders of the 2001 attacks. She noted that as a native New Yorker, the President has long reflected on the harrowing events of that day.

The memorial landscape for the 25th anniversary is set to include several notable figures, including:

  • Former President George W. Bush and Laura Bush
  • Former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton
  • Former President Barack Obama
  • Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani

The President previously attended a memorial event at Ground Zero during the 2024 presidential campaign alongside other political leaders. Last year, both the President and First Lady Melania Trump observed the anniversary at the Pentagon.
