Incident Caught on Surveillance

A Florida elementary school teacher is facing legal consequences following her arrest for the unauthorized possession of a controlled substance. According to authorities, the 51-year-old educator, identified as Deborah Gibbens, was caught on camera pilfering prescription medication from a fellow staff member's backpack.

The investigation began on October 5, after a school resource deputy was alerted to a reported theft within a school office. The victim, suspicious after noticing her hydrocodone supply had been dwindling over the previous three weeks, had strategically installed a camera to monitor her belongings.

The Investigation and Confession

Upon reviewing the recorded footage, deputies observed Gibbens searching through the coworker's bag, removing a pill bottle, and eventually returning it before zipping the backpack shut. Although she initially denied the allegations when confronted by law enforcement, Gibbens confessed to the act once she was informed that video evidence existed.

Gibbens admitted to investigators that she had been taking the pills since August 31. She attempted to justify her actions by claiming she was under the impression the medication was over-the-counter pain relief, such as Tylenol or ibuprofen. However, records confirmed that the teacher did not possess a valid prescription for the hydrocodone in question.

Legal Consequences and Official Response

While the victim ultimately decided against pursuing formal theft charges, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office secured an arrest warrant for the possession charge. Gibbens was apprehended by local police shortly thereafter and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail. She has since been released on a $2,500 bond.

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly condemned the actions in an official statement, noting the gravity of the breach of trust:

«Teachers are trusted to set the example as they should be role models for their students. Sneaking into a co-worker’s backpack, stealing medicine she didn’t have a prescription for, then lying about it severely breaks that trust.»

A district spokesperson addressed the incident, emphasizing that the actions of one individual do not represent the standards of the district's staff. It remains unclear if Gibbens has secured legal representation or entered a formal plea at this time.
