Tragic Incident in Palm Coast
Law enforcement officials in Flagler County, Florida, are investigating a disturbing murder-suicide that occurred at a residence in Palm Coast. Authorities believe the incident, which resulted in the deaths of a married couple, was a pre-planned act of violence.
According to Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly, detectives discovered a note in the suspect's vehicle that appeared to outline the fatal plan. Deputies arrived at the scene shortly after 10 p.m. on a Wednesday night following reports of gunfire.
The Investigation and Timeline
Upon arriving at the home, deputies found 55-year-old Rakim-Shakur Brooks dead in the garage from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Inside the residence, they discovered his 47-year-old wife, Estrella, who was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel despite attempts to provide life-saving aid.
Two other individuals were present in the house during the incident but remained unharmed. One witness reported hearing a heated argument between the couple—who had been together for roughly nine years and married in 2024—followed by the sound of gunshots. According to authorities, the witness noted that the couple had an ongoing history of domestic issues involving alcohol.
A History of Violence
Sheriff Staly highlighted that Brooks possessed an extensive criminal record, including 17 prior arrests and eight felony convictions. His criminal history included charges ranging from aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and robbery with a firearm to domestic battery.
In a statement regarding the tragedy, Sheriff Staly expressed his condolences to those affected. «Our prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragic and senseless violence,» he said, noting that this was the second domestic-related murder-suicide in the area in recent weeks.
A Call for Help
The sheriff emphasized the urgency of addressing domestic abuse, stating, «This guy had a lengthy and violent history, but no amount of anger justifies taking someone else’s life. I again want to emphasize that domestic violence has no place in our community. If you are in a violent or caustic relationship, I ask you to reach out for help. Reaching out may just save your life.»
