The Showrunner’s Perspective
Addressing the creative decision, co-creator Ryan Condal suggested that the lack of historical documentation for this event is consistent with the nature of the Targaryen dynasty. As reported by various media outlets, Condal humorously noted, «Targaryens say crazy s* all the time.»
Condal further explained the rationale behind the scene:
«It’s not in the book, and it’s not in the history, but there is a bunch of talk about how Rhaenyra became very despotic and became a tyrant at the end and was very unpopular with the people. So much of [the Targaryens’] existence is their self-aggrandizement. For the stonemasons standing there in the crowd just looking up at this [speech], it could just sound like somebody trying to make something of themselves.»
Looking Toward the Final Season
The scene serves as a narrative catalyst, highlighting a significant transition in Rhaenyra’s connection to her subjects as the series prepares for its concluding arc. According to Condal, this shift is intended to emphasize her deteriorating standing with the populace, which will likely factor into her downfall in the upcoming episodes.
Looking ahead, production on the final season of House of the Dragon is moving forward, with a projected release date in 2028. Condal expressed enthusiasm for the series' conclusion, promising that fans can expect an expansion of the world-building, stating, «We’re very excited to get back in, and we have new characters and new dragons and new locations all to come that I think are gonna make it a very worthy final season.»
