Tragic Incident in Evansville

A heartbreaking incident has occurred in Evansville, Indiana, where a 3-year-old boy lost his life due to drowning. The child was found unresponsive in a swimming pool while his mother, identified as Amie Jo Farber, was reportedly unconscious nearby due to extreme intoxication.

The Sequence of Events

According to a probable cause affidavit, authorities were called to a residence on Saturday following reports of the unresponsive child. Upon arrival, emergency responders attempted life-saving measures and transported the boy to a local hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.

The homeowner, who witnessed the events, stated that Farber had arrived at the residence already appearing intoxicated. The witness noted that the child was playing in the pool on a floatie while he and Farber sat on the patio. After stepping inside for approximately ten minutes, the homeowner returned to find Farber «passed out» in a chair. Upon realizing the child was missing, he discovered the floatie overturned and the boy face-down in the water.

Details of the Investigation

The affidavit suggests that Farber consumed five 25-ounce cans of Bud Ice within a two-hour window while at the home. When questioned by law enforcement, the mother claimed she had briefly entered the pool before returning to the chair, where she stated she «must’ve fallen asleep.»

A bystander who contacted 911 explicitly informed emergency dispatchers that the mother had «passed out drunk» during the time the child was left unattended.

Legal Consequences

Following the investigation, Amie Jo Farber was taken into custody by the Evansville Police Department and booked into the Vandenburgh County Jail. She currently faces a charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death. Farber is being held on a $25,000 bond, with a court appearance scheduled for September 23. As of now, it remains unclear if the defendant has secured legal counsel or entered a formal plea.
