A Prelude to the Sphere
In a special solo appearance on Friday, October 9, John Mayer offered audiences a preview of the creative direction for his forthcoming residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas. The event, held at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, served as part of the venue's three-day 30th-anniversary festivities.
Mirroring the stripped-back format of his 2023 and 2024 tours, the Grammy-winning artist commanded the stage solo, accompanied only by his acoustic guitar, a piano, and a microphone, eschewing the traditional full-band setup for the 10,000 fans in attendance.
An Intimate Setlist
During the two-hour concert, Mayer treated the crowd to a 20-song setlist that spanned his prolific career. The show kicked off with a performance of «Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.» Throughout the evening, he revisited fan favorites such as «Your Body Is a Wonderland» and «Gravity,» ultimately concluding the night with a rendition of Tom Petty’s «Free Fallin’».
The Mohegan Sun anniversary celebration continues with performances by country star Lainey Wilson and DJ Cassidy, the latter bringing his «Pass the Mic Live!» series to the stage alongside notable guests including Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, and Nelly.
Preparation for Las Vegas
Mayer, who is no stranger to the Sphere venue having performed there previously with Dead & Company, has been dedicated to the development of his new show. In a recent social media update, he shared his enthusiasm for the project:
«The excitement around the reveal inspires me to go even deeper into creating this show over the months to come. It’s never lost on me that I get to work with the most talented people to make beautiful things for a living. I can’t wait for you to see and hear what I’m dreaming up.»
Beyond his live residencies, the artist is currently focused on producing his ninth studio album, which will serve as the successor to his 2021 release, Sob Rock.
