A Retail Encounter Gone Wrong
Kelly Clarkson recently opened up about a frustrating shopping trip in Brooklyn, describing an incident that mirrored the iconic scene from the 1990 film Pretty Woman. The 44-year-old singer took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her disappointment after visiting a store she initially found appealing.
Clarkson alleged that upon entering the establishment, she felt as though the staff doubted her financial ability to make a purchase. According to her account, an unidentified employee attempted to steer her toward "something comparable" to her intended items, implying that the boutique's standard merchandise might be beyond her budget.
"Wow, dude," Clarkson wrote on social media. "You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale." She concluded her post with a sarcastic recommendation for the shop, Art of Play, suggesting that customers should visit if they "enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts’ character in Pretty Woman."
The 'Pretty Woman' Comparison
In the classic film, Julia Roberts' character, Vivian Ward, enters a high-end Beverly Hills boutique only to be condescendingly dismissed by the staff based on her appearance. The clerks incorrectly assume she cannot afford the luxury items, leading to a pivotal moment where Vivian later returns to the store to confront them for their prejudicial treatment.
Life in New York City
Clarkson, who moved to New York City in 2023 with her children, River Rose, 12, and Remington, 10, has previously spoken about the benefits of city living. Raising her children with her late ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, she highlighted the cultural diversity of the city as a major advantage for her family.
"It’s a beautiful city to raise kiddos in because I wasn’t really exposed to different cultures," Clarkson noted during a recent podcast appearance. "I just meant it’s a cool thing for them to have just every color of the rainbow, every color of personality, everything."
Despite the challenges following their father’s passing, Clarkson shared that she and her children are focusing on family time, engaging in activities like cooking and playing games as they adjust to their new life in the city.
