Addressing the Salary Controversy
Louisa Levy, the creator behind the Prime Video series Off Campus, has officially responded to reports suggesting a notable disparity in compensation between the show's male and female cast members.
The controversy stems from a recent episode of the In the Vault podcast, which purported to detail the earnings of several actors involved in the production. The podcast alleged that actors Belmont Cameli, Josh Heuston, Stephen Kalyn, and Antonio Cipriano received salaries ranging from $120,000 to $260,000 for the season. Furthermore, the podcast hosts claimed that actresses Mika Abdalla and Ella Bright earned significantly lower wages, specifically citing a figure of $160,000 per season. In a direct response to these claims, Levy took to social media to refute the podcast’s allegations.
Adapting the Source Material for Television
Based on the popular book series by Elle Kennedy, Off Campus depicts the lives of an elite ice hockey team and their partners. According to the show's official synopsis, the story explores themes of «love, heartbreak, and self-discovery — forging deep friendships and enduring bonds while navigating the complexities that come with transitioning into adulthood.»
The transition from literature to television has involved creative adjustments. While the first season focused on the romance between Hannah (Bright) and Garrett (Cameli), production shifts have occurred regarding future storylines. Levy explained the creative process of adapting the novels, stating:
«We have a lot of stories told in different ways. We have eight episodes instead of the whole book, so we really started with the things that were super nonnegotiable — that without those things it wouldn’t be Off Campus.»
Creative Vision and Character Development
Discussing how the team balanced the original source material with the demands of a streaming series, Levy noted that the production aimed to honor the fans while maintaining the narrative integrity of the show. «From there, we added as many of the book moments as we could,» Levy explained. «We dropped them in like Easter eggs, and we just really spent time taking one’s inside character and externalizing them.»
