Overview of the Investigation

A major criminal investigation has led to charges against 14 individuals, including current and former students of Pennsylvania State University, as well as a prominent Pittsburgh-based lawyer. Authorities allege that the group managed a highly lucrative, multistate cocaine trafficking network that utilized two local fraternity houses as operational hubs.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday officially announced the charges on August 18, 2026. According to prosecutors, the operation was a well-organized criminal enterprise involving fraternity members and their associates, active between 2023 and 2024.

The Alleged Ringleders

Prosecutors have identified Agostino Abbatiello (a member of Sigma Chi) and Thomas Robinson (a member of Delta Upsilon) as the primary architects of the distribution ring. Despite graduating from Penn State in 2024, both men allegedly continued to coordinate supply runs to New York and Philadelphia to maintain the flow of narcotics onto the campus.

Abbatiello was taken into custody without bail following his failure to appear for a scheduled court appearance. Both he and another defendant, Lars Zeepvat, face severe felony charges, including conspiracy and involvement in corrupt organizations.

Coercion and Internal Operations

Court documents reveal how the network functioned internally. Lars Zeepvat testified that he and Abbatiello were close associates in the drug trade. Zeepvat claimed that his involvement deepened after he failed to repay a $1,500 debt incurred during a spring break trip. He alleged that Abbatiello forced him to participate in cocaine deliveries as a form of debt repayment.

The indictment noted a significant shift in Abbatiello’s behavior in 2023, as he transitioned from sourcing drugs for personal use and close friends to running a profit-driven distribution business.

The Bust of Thomas Robinson

Law enforcement officials tracked Thomas Robinson through digital payment footprints on Venmo. Informants alerted police that an individual using the handle “T-Rob” was conducting large-scale drug sales from the Delta Upsilon fraternity house. When authorities raided the property in late 2024, they discovered:

  • Over eight grams of cocaine
  • Approximately eight ounces of marijuana
  • More than 200 amphetamine pills
  • A .45-caliber handgun stored in a safe

Robinson allegedly identified Abbatiello as his primary supplier, noting that he had been recruited into the business in July 2023. Between January and September 2024, Robinson reportedly accepted large shipments of cocaine with valuations reaching as high as $22,000.

Involvement of a Pittsburgh Attorney

The investigation also led to the arrest of Paul Robinson, Thomas Robinson’s father and a well-known attorney at the firm Meyer, Darragh, Buckler, Bebeneck & Eck. He has been charged with hindering apprehension and tampering with evidence, with prosecutors alleging that he took active steps to conceal assets—including cash and narcotics—related to the case.

University Response

In response to the scandal, Penn State officials placed the Delta Upsilon fraternity on interim suspension. While the university has condemned the alleged criminal activity, they noted that Sigma Chi remains outside of their institutional oversight. Andrea Dowhower, vice president for student affairs, stated:

«We are horrified by these serious allegations against current and former students. Criminal activity, including hazing, such as this has no place at our institution, and we will cooperate with law enforcement in any way we can.»

Authorities have confirmed that while the core members of the trafficking ring are in custody, the legal process is in its early stages, with preliminary hearings expected to follow.
