A Difficult Decision for the Tennis Legend
Serena Williams has announced that she will no longer participate in the doubles event at this year’s Wimbledon tournament. The tennis icon, who had intended to compete alongside her sister, Venus Williams, expressed deep disappointment regarding the situation.
In a social media statement released on Saturday, July 4, the 44-year-old athlete shared her frustration:
«I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus Williams once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete.»
Recovery and Challenges During the Comeback
Williams expressed her appreciation for tournament director Jamie Baker and the entire Wimbledon staff for their support during her preparation. She also thanked her fans for their continued encouragement during her return to professional play.
The star recently resumed her career in June, following a period of retirement. Her path to this year’s Wimbledon included participating in the Berlin Open with partner Karolina Muchova and an initial singles match at Wimbledon against Maya Joint. It was during the latter match that Williams experienced a setback with her knee late in the first set.
Health Status and Future Outlook
Providing further insight into her physical condition, the athlete shared an image of the medical procedure she underwent, noting,
«The photo of the syringes shows the fluid they drained from my knee after my singles match…yikes! The good news is my knee shouldn’t swell or collect that much fluid again. The bad news is that, as hard as I tried, I just wasn’t able to get it ready for doubles.»
Despite the withdrawal, Williams remains reflective on the significance of her comeback. Following her first-round singles loss, she shared on Instagram:
«It feels so good to be back on the grass at Wimbledon. I’m incredibly thankful for the wild card — and even more grateful my daughters got to see that it’s never too late to chase something you love.»
