A Bold Rebranding Effort
After nearly three decades on air, the masterminds behind the satirical hit South Park have announced a radical shift. In a move described as a direct jab at Donald Trump, series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have declared that the show will officially be renamed South America.
This satirical decision was announced in a press release following the show's recent Emmy victory. The creators stated: «Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.»
Timing and Season Premiere Details
Alongside the announcement of the name change, the team confirmed that the 29th season of the series is scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, September 16. The production will follow a bi-weekly release schedule, with new installments becoming available for streaming on Paramount+ the following day.
The Satirical Motivation
The transition from South Park to South America serves as a pointed critique of Donald Trump’s history of obsessing over the naming conventions of states and geographical features. The show, which recently secured its fifth Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program, has a long history of incorporating political commentary into its narrative.
Historically, the show has frequently utilized its character Mr. Garrison to parody Trump's political career. However, the creative direction shifted significantly during the 27th and 28th seasons, where the team opted to use actual imagery of Trump and Vice President JD Vance to satirize the current administration.
Past Friction with the Administration
While there has been no official response from Trump regarding this latest stunt, the relationship between the series and the political figure has been historically contentious. In previous cycles, the White House issued formal statements criticizing the show’s depiction of the former president.
Following their latest Creative Arts Emmy win, the show’s official social media channels celebrated the milestone by sharing an image of Trump holding an Emmy, underscoring their ongoing commitment to using the political landscape as a primary source for their humor.
