Background of the Suspect

Following a deadly confrontation near the White House, investigations into the background of 21-year-old Nasire Best have revealed a documented history of mental health struggles. According to reports, Best had multiple prior encounters with law enforcement in the vicinity of the presidential residence.

In one notable incident, Best was taken into custody after declaring that «he was Jesus Christ.» Furthermore, records indicate he was subjected to an involuntary psychiatric commitment in July 2025 after obstructing vehicle access near the White House. His social media activity also reflected these delusions, with one post stating, «I’m actually the son of God.» Media reports suggest that Best had previously made threats against the life of President Donald Trump.

The violence unfolded on Saturday evening near a Secret Service checkpoint. At approximately 6:00 p.m. ET, an individual near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue drew a firearm and began shooting. Secret Service personnel immediately returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. The individual was subsequently pronounced dead at a local hospital.

During the exchange of gunfire, a bystander was struck and remains in critical condition. Anthony Guglielmi, Chief of Communications for the Secret Service, confirmed that no agents were injured during the encounter.
