Back to Business at NYCC
Tom Welling, best known for his role as Clark Kent in the hit series Smallville, returned to the spotlight at the New York Comic Con held at the Javits Center. The 49-year-old actor appeared unfazed by recent social media headlines, engaging with fans and signing merchandise shortly after an unintended photo surfaced online.
During the event, Welling reunited with his former co-stars—Erica Durance, Kristin Kreuk, and Michael Rosenbaum—to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the classic WB drama. Michael Rosenbaum shared the excitement on social media, posting a selfie of the group on stage with the caption, «Wow. What a treat. @newyorkcomiccon with my pals.»
Reflecting on 'Smallville' Memories
Shifting the focus away from his recent online mishap, Welling spent his time at the convention sharing stories from his tenure as Superman. On a recent appearance on the Inside Of You podcast, the actor opened up about his character’s development and on-screen relationships.
Welling highlighted how the evolution of Clark’s relationship with Lois Lane, played by Erica Durance, allowed him to showcase a different side of the character. «I think for Clark, he got to relax and have a little sarcasm and a little bit of fun,» he explained. «Before, it was the weight of the world, you know, emotionally, you didn’t get to see that side. That’s what I saw come out in Clark through the Lois relationship.»
Behind the Scenes of a Fan-Favorite Episode
The actor also took a moment to reflect on his favorite episode, titled «Transference,» which famously featured a body-swap storyline between Clark Kent and Lionel Luthor, portrayed by John Glover.
Welling recalled the intense preparation required for the role, noting that he was called to set early to assist Glover with capturing Clark’s demeanor. He recounted a memorable exchange where Glover asked for advice on the character's stillness:
«John’s in a cell. And I go over to him, [and ask], 'John, what’s going on?' And he goes, 'Tom, how do you do it?' And I go, 'What?' He goes, 'How do you do nothing? You just stand there.' Obviously, I look up to him as one of the greatest actors I’ll ever be around in my life, and we had a brief conversation. I don’t know if it’s what I said but maybe how I said it that [about] my vibe, and he sort of settled into something. I just remember that being like, 'This is this is amazing what we’re trying to do here.'»
