Following a first season marked by creative concerns, questions have swirled regarding the status of veteran actor Ed Harris on the hit series Dutton Ranch. Despite expressing dissatisfaction with his experience during the show's debut, reports indicate that the 75-year-old actor is slated to return for the upcoming second season, which is currently in development.
According to industry reports, Harris signed a two-year contract for the series, with an additional option for a third season, keeping him tied to the project for the foreseeable future.
Shifting Focus in Season 2
The primary friction for Harris stemmed from his character, Everett McKinney, receiving minimal screen time in the first season. However, co-stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have assured fans that the narrative trajectory is changing.
«I think season 2 is going to feel very much more Ed’s show,» Reilly recently shared. «This is not the Beth and Rip show. This is Dutton Ranch, and there’s four lead characters.» She added that the production team is proud to work with such industry heavyweights, emphasizing that the project aims to stand as a high-quality drama rather than a superficial spinoff.
Cole Hauser echoed these sentiments, noting that Harris's character was underutilized during the inaugural season. He stated: «We’re going to make sure that he is a big part of helping us, moving forward in whatever capacity. Everett will become a very important, integral part of season 2.»
Behind-the-Scenes Changes
The production of Dutton Ranch has faced several challenges, most notably the departure of showrunner Chad Feehan after the completion of the first season. While reports suggested internal friction contributed to the exit, lead actors have largely dismissed the drama as a standard part of the television business.
«Showrunners change all the time. This business is about adapting,» Hauser remarked regarding the management shakeup. Kelly Reilly agreed, reflecting on the arduous but rewarding nature of the creative process.
In a move toward stability, sources indicate that Ed Harris was actively involved in the selection process for Feehan's successor, Benjamin Cavell, the creator of SEAL Team. Dutton Ranch is scheduled to return to Paramount+ in 2027.
