A Tragic Loss for the Athletic Community

The sporting world is in mourning following the untimely death of Australian sprinter Jemma Stapleton. The 25-year-old athlete passed away due to an undisclosed accident that occurred while she was abroad on a family vacation.


Following the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was launched on June 10 to assist the grieving family in the difficult process of bringing her home. The response from the public was immense, with the fundraiser collecting over $103,000 in donations. By June 12, the family announced that contributions were closed, expressing their profound gratitude for the outpouring of support and love from the community, while requesting privacy during this period of mourning.


Tributes from Family and Loved Ones

Jemma’s passing came just two weeks after she had celebrated her 25th birthday. Those closest to her have shared moving tributes to honor her memory.


Her brother, Joel Stapleton, remembered her as his closest confidante.

«I’m so lucky to have had her guiding me through my first 21 years. She was always there for me and whenever I needed help she was always there. For those that knew her, you know how lucky you were to have her in your life,»
Joel shared in a video tribute.


Her partner, Tyler Gray, also took to social media to express his heartbreak, stating,

«I can’t put into words the hurt I am feeling. You are the single greatest thing to happen to me and I am so grateful for the love we shared. I love you with all my heart.»


A Promising Athletic Career

Stapleton was a respected figure in professional running. Most notably, she achieved a third-place finish in the women’s final at the 2025 Stawell Gift, which is recognized as Australia's most historic and prestigious short-distance race.


The organization behind the Stawell Gift issued an official statement regarding her passing: «Her outstanding performance to finish third in the 2025 Powercor Women’s Gift was a testament to her talent, dedication and passion for the sport of professional running.
