A Fictional Echo of a Real-Life Scandal

HBO’s latest drama series, War, draws inspiration from various high-profile celebrity splits, but its premiere episode features a sequence specifically designed to mirror the widely publicized moment when Olivia Wilde was served custody paperwork on stage at CinemaCon.

In the opening episode, which aired on Thursday, October 1, the fictional celebrity couple Morgan, played by Dominic West, and Carla, portrayed by Sienna Miller, prepare for their respective divorce filings. Morgan, having discovered Carla’s intentions, manages to preempt her by arranging for an associate to deliver the legal documents during her movie premiere.

The Creative Vision Behind the Scene

Show creator George Kay explained that while the scene is not a literal recreation, it serves as a deliberate nod to the 2022 incident involving Wilde. “What I found really compelling about that actual real-life thing was how [Wilde] had to take on the brunt of the truth of what she’d just been served,” Kay remarked. “You really feel for her because she’s trying to do something else at the time.”

Kay praised Sienna Miller’s performance in the sequence, noting the complexity of portraying a character who must remain composed under intense personal pressure. “Sienna plays an actress, so she can do that amazing thing as an actress herself of playing the actress,” he added. The show explores the intersection of high-stakes legal battles and the intrusion of social media, with the characters' divorce becoming a public spectacle on the very platform Morgan created to foster connection.

Context of the Real-World Event

In 2022, Olivia Wilde was handed a confidential envelope while promoting her film Don’t Worry Darling at CinemaCon. The documents pertained to a custody dispute regarding her children with ex-partner Jason Sudeikis. Reflecting on the event in a recent podcast appearance, Wilde described the experience as “incredibly traumatizing,” noting that despite the ordeal, she felt compelled to complete her presentation before processing the shock backstage.

Behind the Scenes of 'War'

War centers on the cutthroat rivalry between two prominent London law firms, Cathcarts and Taylor & Byrne, as they clash over the high-profile divorce of a tech entrepreneur and a film star. To ensure the legal maneuvering felt authentic, the production team consulted with experts in high-stakes family law.

“We have a brilliant lawyer consultant called Catherine who works with lots of high-powered divorce cases,” Kay shared. While he initially considered drawing directly from numerous celebrity breakups, he eventually pivoted to developing original, complex scenarios for his characters. War airs on HBO on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET and is available for streaming on Max.
