The Reality of Constant Surveillance
Jennifer Garner recently shed light on the intense pressures she faced from the paparazzi while raising her children with her former husband, Ben Affleck. During an appearance on the Shut Up Evan podcast, the actress detailed how photographers would frequently disregard traffic laws and public safety to capture images of their family.
«If I went through a yellow light, 15 cars would go through the red light behind me. They would drive up onto people’s lawns, even on a hillside,» Garner shared, illustrating the dangerous environment created by the pursuit of celebrity photos.
Impact on Daily Family Life
Garner explained that the constant presence of photographers often disrupted normal family activities. Even routine events, such as her children’s sports practices, became targets for the media. She recalled an instance where a local soccer association requested they stop attending games because the influx of nearly 20 cars following them caused significant disturbances for others.
The situation became particularly distressing when it began to affect the safety of her children at school. Garner noted: «Kids were getting knocked over coming out of preschool by photographers who were so hungry to get to me or to Ben, trying to get to our kids.»
Targeting Motherhood Over Stardom
Despite living in a neighborhood populated by other high-profile celebrities, Garner felt she was disproportionately targeted simply because she was the one accompanied by children. She observed that photographers often ignored other famous figures—such as Ben Affleck or Matt Damon—to focus exclusively on her. «They wouldn’t follow Ben, they wouldn’t follow Matt Damon… they were like, ‘There’s the chick with the kids,’» she remarked.
A Complex Long-Term Relationship
Decades later, Garner reveals that she is still followed by photographers who have been assigned to cover her for over 20 years. This has led to an unconventional and complicated dynamic.
Describing her relationship with one long-term photographer, Garner explained: «There’s kind of a Stockholm syndrome thing and at the same time, I’ve called the cops on him a million times and been like, ‘Can you please just give me a walk around the block with my kids and my dog?’» While she maintains an odd sense of mutual respect with some, the struggle for privacy remains a recurring challenge in her daily life.
