A Memorable Wedding Experience
During a recent episode of her self-titled podcast, 53-year-old Jenny McCarthy shared personal recollections from the 2006 wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. McCarthy, who was dating Jim Carrey at the time, alleged that the Top Gun actor actively attempted to recruit her into the Church of Scientology during the event.
The Incident with Baby Suri
McCarthy described attending the rehearsal dinner, where she was seated near the couple and their inner circle. She recounted a moment involving the couple's then-infant daughter, Suri:
«My mom was a nanny … [and she] had seven babies that we babysat. So, I’m a baby person. I went over there and go, ‘Can I hold the baby?’»
According to McCarthy, her request prompted an immediate and chilling reaction from the other guests. She claimed the entire room went silent and stared at her, describing the atmosphere as reminiscent of the film Rosemary’s Baby. She termed the collective cold reaction the “Scientology stare.” She noted that while Holmes eventually handed the infant over, the surrounding silence persisted until she returned the child, at which point normal conversation resumed. McCarthy remarked, “I thought to myself, ‘OK, I am in the belly of the beast right now.’”
Interactions with David Miscavige
Beyond the incident with the child, McCarthy alleged that Cruise introduced her to the leader of the church, David Miscavige, who served as his best man. McCarthy shared her sarcastic reaction to meeting the church head:
«I go, ‘Haha, you got picked. Congratulations.’ He did not like that, and I loved every second of it. I tried to do a perfect, like, passive-aggressive but still kind [response].»
Reflections on Cruise and Leadership
Despite her unsettling experience at the wedding, McCarthy characterized Cruise as a “very nice human being,” though she added that he appeared “very programmed.” Conversely, she expressed a much stronger reaction to meeting Miscavige, stating, “David was a force that I thought to myself, if I had to work underneath him, for him, around him, I don’t know if I’d be able to survive just from the little interaction. I’m a strong woman, [but] just from that little interaction, it’s like he could have broke me easily.”
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes finalized their divorce in 2012. As of now, representatives for the actor have not provided a public comment regarding McCarthy's assertions.
