A Hard-Won Victory Over Cancer
Reality television personality Katie Thurston recently shared uplifting news regarding her mother's battle with breast cancer. In a post shared via her Instagram Stories on June 11, the 35-year-old expressed her joy as her mother successfully concluded her final round of radiation therapy.
Thurston highlighted the importance of proactive healthcare, explaining that she had strongly encouraged her mother to undergo an MRI after learning about the risks associated with having dense breast tissue. “We were able to find her cancer at stage one,” Thurston noted. “She had a lumpectomy and today was her last day of radiation!! 21 rounds and this tough mama got to ring the bell!”
The Importance of Early Advocacy
The journey began in January, when Thurston revealed that her mother had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, occurring just one year after Thurston’s own medical challenges. Reflecting on the diagnostic process, Thurston emphasized the limitations of standard screening methods, stating:
“Dense breasts need more than a mammogram to screen for cancer and yet somehow my mom had never been referred for further imaging. We are getting more answers today but I believe our own advocacy allowed us to catch this early.”
She further urged her followers to remain vigilant: “If you have family history of breast cancer or dense breasts, please request further imaging such as a breast ultrasound and breast MRI.”
Thurston’s Personal Health Journey
Katie Thurston has been candid about her own experience with cancer as well. Following her initial diagnosis in February 2023, she faced a progression to stage IV after the cancer spread to her liver. To aid in her treatment, she underwent a double mastectomy this past April. Her husband, Jeff Arcuri, provided updates to supporters throughout the process, confirming that the surgery was a success and noting that Thurston remained in excellent spirits.
With her mother now officially declared “cancer-free,” Thurston continues to manage her own ongoing treatment plan, which includes hormone suppression therapy to assist in her recovery.
