Actress Kelsey Asbille is officially returning to the big screen. Her new project, The Kellys, marks her first major role following the conclusion of Yellowstone and the unexpected death of her character, Monica, in the spin-off series Marshals. According to reports, the 34-year-old actress will star alongside Hollywood heavyweights Arnold Schwarzenegger and Liam Hemsworth in this upcoming action-packed feature, which has been secured by Amazon MGM for a global streaming release.
Plot Details of 'The Kellys'
While specific information regarding Asbille's character remains confidential, the film's premise has been revealed. The story centers on Jack Kelly, a former New York City police officer whose life takes a dark turn when his wife, Molly, is abducted by terrorists. The official synopsis notes:
“Subsequently, he’ll have to join forces with the people he fears most to save her: His family.”Production for the film is currently in progress.
Reflecting on Monica’s Arc
Asbille’s departure from the Yellowstone franchise was marked by a significant narrative shift. In the original series, Monica transitioned from a teacher on the Broken Rock Indian Reservation to a professor at Montana State University, all while navigating a complex life with Kayce Dutton. By the end of Yellowstone, Kayce and Monica were alive and together.
However, the premiere of Marshals in March revealed that Monica had passed away following a battle with cancer. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut explained the creative decision, stating:
“Kayce had such a perfect ending in Yellowstone... As we were trying to figure out how to tell the next chapter in Kayce’s story, it felt like he really needed to be shaken out of that. Unfortunately, tragedy tends to find Kayce, so something bad was going to happen for him one way or the other.”
Hudnut added that the team aimed to handle the character's exit with respect, noting, “I also didn’t want to step on the ending of Yellowstone, because what they had was a beautiful ending. Unfortunately, real life intervened.” While Asbille has not publicly commented on the character's death, she did permit the production to use her likeness for photographs featured within the new series.
