A Call for Compassion
At the 2026 Academy of Country Music Awards held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, 31-year-old Lauren Alaina took a moment to shift the spotlight toward Mental Health Awareness Month. Before welcoming the duo Dan + Shay to the stage, Alaina delivered a poignant message emphasizing that it is acceptable to struggle and that no one is truly alone in their battle.
«Sometimes, lifting lives can mean saving lives. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and an important time to say if you are secretly suffering, you are not alone,» Alaina shared with the audience, visibly moved. «Like too many of you out there, I know what it’s like to lose someone who struggled with their mental health, so to anybody out there tonight suffering, please know there is always someone to listen and someone to help. Just please, please reach out.»
The Story Behind the Song
Overcome with emotion, Alaina introduced Dan + Shay, noting that their latest track, «Say So,» was born from a tragic loss within the country music community. According to Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, the song was written in tribute to their mentor and close friend, Ben Vaughn, who died by suicide in early 2025 at age 49.
The lyrics of the song offer a message of unwavering support, as the chorus states:
«If your light burns out and you’re in the dark / If you can’t pick up the pieces / If the world you trusted falls apart / If your heart’s run out of reasons / I’ll be there every time you call / Pick you up every time you fall / If you’re going through hell, you’re not alone / If you need somebody, say so.»
Advocacy Through Personal Experience
Alaina’s advocacy is deeply personal. The former American Idol star has been candid about her own experiences with depression, particularly during the onset of the pandemic. She channeled these difficult emotions into her music, notably documenting her mental health journey on her album Sitting Pretty on Top of the World.
The segment was presented under the banner of ACM Lifting Lives, the philanthropic organization associated with the Academy of Country Music dedicated to providing support and resources for those in need.
