Honoring a Life
Lyle Landers, the ex-husband of the late TikTok creator Sara Gilson, has stepped forward to take full responsibility for her funeral expenses. Gilson tragically lost her life in an apparent murder-suicide committed by her estranged husband, Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey.
Speaking with media representatives, Landers shared that he felt compelled to provide Gilson with a proper farewell. He expressed that because of his current financial stability, he promised her parents that he would ensure she receives the service she deserves. The couple, who share two children, remained on good terms following their divorce.
Landers spent his own birthday earlier this week finalizing arrangements, including selecting a burial plot for the late influencer. A private memorial service is scheduled to take place later this week.
Community Support for Children
In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was established to support Gilson’s two children. The initiative has already surpassed $33,000 in donations. According to the page, these funds are designated for the children's immediate needs, including counseling, ongoing education, and living expenses as they navigate the loss of their mother.
The Lead-Up to the Tragedy
Legal documents reveal a history of conflict leading up to the incident. In June, Gilson obtained a protective order against Duffey. During that same period, another local family had petitioned for a restraining order against Duffey, alleging that he had sexually abused a teenager while serving as her basketball coach. Oklahoma authorities were actively investigating these claims at the time of his death.
Shortly before the murder, Gilson used her platform to shed light on her situation. On July 11, she posted a viral TikTok video using a popular true-crime trend, where she alluded to her husband's alleged predatory behavior:
«Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon-to-be ex-husband, who I just found out is a pedophile. I wish I was joking.»
Despite the video’s massive viral reach, Landers hopes the public will focus on who she was beyond her online presence. “The world sees her TikTok video and they assume that’s who she is. That’s not her. She was a mom. That’s the real her,” he stated.
Background on the Perpetrator
Regarding Jeremiah Duffey, reports indicate he will not receive a funeral. His family has declined to honor his memory, and instead, his ex-wife, Stephanie Ramsay, confirmed that his five children have arranged for his cremation, with his remains to be placed in a private plot.
Public records and past filings highlight a troubled history between Gilson and Duffey, including previous legal disputes and financial instability. Documents obtained by investigators show Duffey filed for bankruptcy in 2024, listing a firearm among his assets. Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the status of his weapons, as he had previously claimed a firearm was stolen from his vehicle, a statement made to local police earlier this year.
