Saturday Night Live star Marcello Hernández took center stage as the host of the 2026 ESPY Awards, held at the David H. Koch Theater in New York City’s Lincoln Center. The 28-year-old comedian opened the ceremony with a monologue that pulled no punches, quickly setting a lively tone for the evening by roasting various figures in the sports world.
Hernández kicked off his set by referencing Tiger Woods’ recent DUI arrest in Florida. He then shifted focus to Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, joking, «Congratulations to Caleb—and Tiger Woods will be on the cover of Grand Theft Auto.»
Pop Culture and Sports Figures in the Hot Seat
The comedian didn't shy away from trending topics, including the personal life of Bill Belichick. He drew a connection between the New York Knicks’ recent NBA Championship and the notable 48-year age difference between the coach and his partner, Jordon Hudson. When the audience reaction turned briefly tense, Hernández playfully retorted, «That’s where you all draw the line?»
Jake Paul was another target of the night’s humor. Addressing the boxer directly, Hernández remarked: «Jake, that’s just a joke. Don’t fight me. My dad and my stepdad are here and they’re both over 50 and I know that’s how you like ‘em.»
He also took a moment to acknowledge Shane Gillis, who hosted the previous year's ceremony. «I want to shout out last year’s host, Shane Gillis, who is watching this show like a true American,» Hernández quipped. «On his couch, drinking a beer while a Hispanic guy does his job.»
From the Soccer Pitch to the Comedy Stage
Before his transition to comedy, Hernández was a collegiate soccer player at John Carroll University. He ultimately left the sport during his sophomore year to focus on his comedic career, a decision he later described as a turning point that pushed him to excel in his new field. Since joining Saturday Night Live in 2022, he has become a breakout star.
Reflecting on his career shift, Hernández noted the similarities between athletics and comedy:
«Soccer’s a full-time job because you’re taking care of your body, and I think that SNL is a full-time job because of the schedule, but also you’re taking care of your mind; you’re trying to write stuff. It’s a much more mental game than a physical game, but pretty demanding for sure.»
Hernández’s debut as the ESPYs host was widely anticipated, with ESPN leadership praising his energy and deep connection to sports culture as the perfect fit for the event.
