Details of the Investigation

The cause of death for NC State University swimming and diving coach John “Jack” Roney has been officially confirmed. Following his passing last month at the age of 39, an autopsy report has ruled the death as accidental.


According to the medical examiner's findings, the incident occurred while Roney was at a community pool with his wife, Maresa Roney. The report indicates that the coach was performing underwater breath-holding exercises. Surveillance footage captured by the facility showed Roney submerging for over two minutes, surfacing briefly for air, and then going back underwater. When his wife returned after a short absence to make a phone call, she discovered him unresponsive.


The Sequence of Events

The medical examiner noted that Roney had a history of ADHD and was in good physical health as a former collegiate athlete. The sequence of events on the evening of July 5, 2026, was corroborated by the video evidence:

  • Roney and his wife visited the pool following dinner.
  • While his wife stepped away, Roney practiced breath-holding techniques.
  • Video surveillance recorded him surfacing briefly after approximately two minutes and 14 seconds of submersion before submerging a second time.
  • His wife returned about five minutes later and found him unresponsive, at which point she pulled him from the water and initiated CPR while contacting emergency services.

Upon arrival, emergency responders attempted resuscitation for approximately an hour, though Roney remained in pulseless electrical activity.


Investigation Conclusions

The official report emphasizes that there were no signs of foul play, substance abuse, or suicide. Authorities found no evidence of trauma, and the case was subsequently handled by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to ensure a thorough review of the circumstances.


Community and Family Tribute

NC State University expressed its condolences in a public statement, acknowledging Roney's contributions as both an alumnus and a coach. The university noted, “His impact on our program and community will be remembered.”


Family members have shared their grief and tributes on social media. His sister, Amber Moore, described him as the “glue” of the family, highlighting his dedication to constant personal growth. Another sister, Katie Corum, reflected on the loss, stating: «Grief is the price we pay for loving someone so deeply. His absence leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be filled, but the love he gave and the memories he leaves behind will stay with us forever.»


Jack Roney is survived by his wife, Maresa, with whom he recently celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary, as well as their five children and his siblings.
