A Brutal Turn of Events

The latest installment of the hit Paramount+ series Dutton Ranch took a dark turn this past Friday, June 12, as a key character met a grisly end. The narrative unfolded when Chet (played by Hart Denton) was goaded by Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) into seeking retribution following his termination from the ranch.

Chet’s quest for vengeance took a violent turn when he tracked down Joaquin and shot him in the hand. However, the confrontation was cut short when Miguel (Berto Colón) intervened and ultimately took Chet's life. Prior to this climactic moment, Chet had served as a foreman at 10 Petal, only to face a demotion and subsequent firing at the hands of Rip (Cole Hauser).

The Expansion of the Yellowstone Universe

The sprawling Yellowstone franchise first captured audiences in 2018. Following the conclusion of the flagship Paramount Network series in 2024, the universe has continued to grow through new projects, including the CBS show Marshals and the Dutton Ranch spinoff, which officially debuted this past May.

Cast Reactions to Potential Departures

The constant threat of character death within the franchise is not lost on the actors. Actor Menchaca, who plays Zachariah, recently addressed concerns regarding his own character's longevity. He admitted that given his history of playing roles that meet tragic ends, he is always on alert when receiving new scripts.

"It’s always a possibility — and I have a pretty good track record of saying bye bye on a show," Menchaca noted. He even shared a lighthearted anecdote about his wife, Lena Headey, creating a compilation of his character deaths for his birthday. "It was about 10 minutes and it didn’t even have all my deaths," he joked, noting that he frequently scans scripts for signs of his character's demise.

What Lies Ahead for the Ranch

Reflecting on his role, Menchaca shared, "I grew up that life. I just took from ranchers that I worked for. I wanted to be a team roper when I was a kid and it brought my childhood back to me."

Regarding the future of the series, he hinted at building conflicts: "Obviously there’s going to be tension. It definitely creates tension and we will find out that there are some things about the 10 Petal that are unbecoming of a country boy."

Dutton Ranch continues to air on Fridays on Paramount+.
