A Tragic Conclusion for Rue

The third season finale of the acclaimed HBO series Euphoria delivered a massive shock to viewers. Halfway through the final episode, which aired on Sunday, May 31, the show's primary protagonist, Rue (played by Zendaya), was killed off. The plot twist occurred after the antagonist, Alamo (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), discovered that Rue was operating as an undercover informant against him. In a lethal act of retaliation, Alamo provided her with fentanyl-laced painkillers, leading to a fatal overdose.

The remainder of the episode shifted focus to Ali (Colman Domingo), who discovered Rue’s body. His narrative arc centered on his quest to avenge her death, ultimately concluding at the farm Rue had visited earlier in the season, where he honored her memory during a grace at the dinner table.

The Future of the Series

While the death of such a pivotal character caught many off guard, some viewers had anticipated a definitive conclusion to Zendaya’s arc. Speculation regarding the series' future had been rampant, though series creator Sam Levinson remained characteristically vague about long-term plans.

In an interview earlier this April, Levinson noted, «I write every season like it’s the last season. I have no plans for season 4.» He further emphasized his commitment to the current production, adding, «I want to finish this as strong as I can. I’m currently putting the finishing touches on episodes 7 and 8. I just want to deliver a slam-dunk season.»

Nate’s Grim Departure

Rue was not the only major character to meet a dark end during the show's final season. Nate, portrayed by Jacob Elordi, suffered a harrowing fate when he was killed by a rattlesnake bite while trapped in a box underground.

Reflecting on the scene, Elordi described the experience as uniquely intense: «That was a cool way to go. Nate was someone who has made so many mistakes and made so many dark choices. It’s cool to see it all come to what it’s come to.»

The production team took extensive safety precautions, though Levinson confirmed they utilized real snakes for the filming process. Elordi noted that despite the claustrophobic nature of filming inside a coffin, he found the experience surprisingly tranquil. Regarding his time on the show, the actor stated, «It’s a bittersweet thing. This show is a massive part of—not just my career—but my life. It’s been amazing and I’m so proud of being a part of this.»
