Tragic Incident in Memphis
A tragic event unfolded in Memphis, Tennessee, on the afternoon of Monday, August 18, resulting in the death of 5-year-old Tamir Washington. The young boy was at his family's residence when he managed to access his father's unsecured firearm. While briefly left unattended, the child accidentally shot himself in the head.
According to the mother, Rodnesha Walker, the child had been eating and working on school assignments just moments before she stepped out of the room with the victim's brother.
Legal Consequences for the Father
Following the investigation, the child's father, 24-year-old Marquavious Washington, was taken into custody by local authorities. He currently faces several serious felony charges, including:
- Criminally negligent homicide
- Aggravated child abuse
- Reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon
Court records indicate that immediately following the incident, Washington was observed in the front yard of the property, distraught and questioning how his son had discovered the weapon. Neighbors who attempted to provide assistance reported seeing the mother in a state of distress, covered in blood, while hearing cries that the child had shot himself.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Emergency medical services arrived at the scene to stabilize the child and transport him to a nearby pediatric hospital. Despite the efforts of first responders, Tamir succumbed to his injuries less than an hour after law enforcement arrived at the scene.
Washington is currently being held at the Shelby County Jail on a $100,000 bond. He is expected to appear in court on Thursday, August 20. At this time, it remains unclear whether the defendant has secured legal representation or entered a formal plea.
