Indictment Following Criminal Investigation
A Texas man, identified as John Ruben Demeter, has been formally charged in connection with the death of an unborn child. According to an announcement from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, Demeter faces one count of illegal performance of an abortion and one count of injury to a child, charges brought three months after he was first taken into custody.
The incident came to light in February when the victim sought medical attention, fearing she had been poisoned with substances designed to terminate a pregnancy without her knowledge or consent.
The Mechanics of the Alleged Crime
Prosecutors allege that Demeter systematically planned to end the pregnancy by tampering with the victim’s drink. According to statements made by officials during a press conference, Demeter pulverized the medication and combined it with a liquid I.V. packet inside a water bottle.
At the time of the incident, the victim was approximately 14 weeks pregnant. Authorities state that the medication caused the tragic loss of the unborn child. The sheriff noted, “That baby, Presley Mae, was stillborn at the hospital, weighed about 55 grams.”
Motive and Legal Implications
Investigation records suggest that the suspect had previously pressured his girlfriend to terminate the pregnancy, even offering to cover the costs of travel for an out-of-state procedure. When she did not pursue an abortion, he allegedly resorted to non-consensual administration of mifepristone, a drug strictly prohibited under Texas abortion laws.
“These allegations describe conduct that is both deeply troubling and profoundly harmful,” said prosecutor Laura Hill. “Our responsibility is to carefully evaluate the evidence, apply the law as written, and seek justice on behalf of victims and this community.”
Prosecutorial Stance
Montgomery County District Attorney Mike Holley emphasized the gravity of the case, describing it as a calculated act of deception with irreversible consequences. The District Attorney’s Office maintains that it will continue to pursue the case based on the evidence collected and the statutes of the State of Texas.
As of now, it remains unclear whether Demeter has entered a formal plea or secured legal representation. The District Attorney’s office did not immediately provide further comment regarding the status of the legal proceedings.
