A Tragic Early Morning Shooting

A peaceful night turned into a nightmare in Los Angeles when a 20-year-old mother, Maria Barrios Ventura, was fatally wounded while sleeping in her home. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 19, at approximately 3:35 a.m. According to reports, a bullet traveled through her bedroom window, striking the young mother while she was in bed with her one-year-old daughter.

Details of the Incident

Responding officers from the Los Angeles Police Department arrived at the residence to find Ventura suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite immediate efforts, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after the shooting. Her partner, Omar Misael, who was also in the bed at the time, described the terrifying sequence of events:

«A stray bullet passed through here and struck my partner, and another seven shots were fired and hit around here. She died about 10 minutes later.»

Other residents in the area were also affected by the gunfire. Jose Chavez, a local resident, reported that his property, including his vehicle and home, had been struck by the bullets during the same shooting spree.

Ongoing Investigation

Law enforcement officials are currently working to determine the nature of the attack, specifically whether it was a deliberate act directed at the victim or a random act of violence. As of now, the Los Angeles Police Department has confirmed that no suspects have been identified or taken into custody regarding the shooting.

Family Seeks Support

In the wake of this tragedy, Ventura’s family is facing a difficult path forward. Her aunt, Liliana Lopez, expressed the family's deep grief, describing Ventura as a dedicated and loving mother. Because the majority of the victim's family resides in Guatemala, they are struggling to navigate the aftermath of her passing without local support.

To assist with the immediate needs and long-term care of Ventura’s young daughter, the family has initiated a fundraising effort. According to Lopez, every contribution serves to ensure the toddler receives the necessary stability and care following the sudden loss of her mother.
