The Evolution of Kayce Dutton

In the expansive world of Yellowstone, audiences first encountered Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, as a livestock agent for the Montana Livestock Association—a role that required him to safeguard cattle and uphold ranching regulations. This position, combined with his background as a former U.S. Navy SEAL, established him as a man of action and discipline.

However, the March 2026 premiere of the spinoff series, Marshals, saw Kayce trade his life on the ranch for a prestigious position within an elite unit of the U.S. Marshals. The series depicts him utilizing his unique blend of cowboy intuition and military training to combat crime across Montana, all while navigating the emotional and personal tolls of being a frontline protector.

What Does a U.S. Marshal Actually Do?

While the show focuses on high-stakes drama, the real-world responsibilities of a U.S. Marshal are multifaceted. According to official federal guidelines, the duties of the agency include:

  • Tracking and apprehending federal fugitives.
  • Providing security for federal judges and courtrooms.
  • Overseeing the transport of individuals in federal custody.
  • Managing the administration of the Witness Security Program.
  • Handling the seizure and management of assets linked to criminal enterprises.

Behind the Scenes with Luke Grimes

Reflecting on his character’s transition, Luke Grimes shared his perspective on taking the lead in a spinoff. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he admitted to feeling the pressure of meeting fan expectations.

«I’m my own worst critic. I was like, ‘If you take a poll of who people want to have a spinoff, I don’t know if Kayce would be top of that list. I think there’s other characters that they would rather see.’»

Grimes noted that this self-imposed pressure served as a catalyst for his performance, driving him to ensure the quality of the new series. He emphasized that the production team worked diligently to create a narrative that would satisfy long-time Yellowstone fans while remaining accessible to new viewers who might be unfamiliar with the original show.

The actor also shared how the project came to fruition, recalling, «They started bringing it up when we were filming the last few episodes of the original series. There started to be some offers for a spinoff, and I hadn’t gotten one yet, and I was like, ‘I guess that’s it for me.’ And then I got a call and it was like, ‘It’ll be CBS primetime, and it’ll be more of a procedural format.’»

Marshals airs on CBS on Sunday nights at 8 p.m. ET.
