An Unexpected Navigation Error

Brothers Zach and Nate Johnson recently opened up about a major hurdle they faced during their time on The Amazing Race. While viewers witnessed a tense race in the Vancouver premiere, the duo revealed that a critical error involving their water taxi transport remained off-camera.

In an exclusive interview following their elimination, 27-year-old Nate explained that their water taxi driver failed to navigate to the correct drop-off point. «Our water taxi driver didn’t take us to the right spot, so we got dropped off about another mile and a half away from the clue box,» he stated. This error forced the brothers to scramble, requiring them to push themselves physically to make up for the lost time.

The Impact on the Race

During the season premiere, audiences saw Zach, 30, and Nate miss an initial boat, forcing them to wait for the next one. It wasn't until later in the leg that the pair realized the severity of the navigation error.

«We didn’t see where people got dropped off after the water taxi,» Zach noted. «We also never saw the flag detour because we just decided to do canoes and all the stuff that happened in between us running from where we got dropped off to them we didn’t see obviously.»

Despite the setback, Zach felt it provided a clearer picture of their standing: «It put in perspective in my mind that we really weren’t far behind. I knew we weren’t once we started doing the canoes, but it really was close because there was still a bunch of other stuff happening with these other teams that we couldn’t see.»

Overcoming Adversity

Nate expressed pride in how they handled the high-pressure situation. He noted that rather than panicking, they focused on finding the right path. «We ran, got proper directions, and followed where we needed to go. It wasn’t like ‘Oh no, we’re lost. How do we get there?’ It was like no, we did it,» he added.

By the time the brothers arrived at the canoeing challenge, several other teams were still active. Ultimately, the margin between the teams remained incredibly thin throughout the leg. Zach recalled that even at the pit stop, the difference in timing between them and their competitors was likely only a few minutes, emphasizing just how narrow the gap truly was during the fast-paced premiere.
