Remembering Ricky Treadway

The motorsport community is mourning the loss of Ricky Treadway, a former IndyCar driver who has passed away at the age of 56 following a motorcycle accident. While specific details regarding the circumstances of the crash have not been disclosed, reports confirmed his untimely death.

Career Highlights in IndyCar

Treadway was well-known within the racing world, not only for his own driving career but also for his family legacy. He was the son of Fred Treadway, the team owner who famously secured a victory at the 1997 Indianapolis 500. Ricky competed in the IndyCar Series throughout the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

His most notable appearance came during the 2002 Indianapolis 500. Unfortunately, his race ended prematurely due to an on-track collision with fellow competitor Tony Kanaan. Reflecting on his time in the sport, a spokesperson for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway noted, “The Indy 500 start was the highlight of Treadway’s INDYCAR SERIES career, which consisted of 11 races in the 2001 and 2002 seasons for his father’s teams Treadway-Hubbard Racing and Treadway Racing.”

Tributes From the Racing Community

Following the news, prominent figures in the industry took to social media to share their condolences. Two-time Indy 500 champion Arie Luyendyk expressed his grief on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “Sad news hearing Rick Treadway passed away last Saturday. Our condolences go out to my former team owner Fred Treadway, Janice and Brian Treadway. Rick was a fun, crazy, humble, wild and brave personality.”

Current IndyCar and NASCAR driver Conor Daly also paid his respects, noting the impact Treadway’s name had on his own racing commentary and research.

Life Beyond the Track

In his professional life outside of racing, Treadway had pivoted toward a career in aviation. According to an official release from IndyCar, he was active in business development and operated as a commercial pilot for his private charter service. Furthermore, he held certification from the Federal Aviation Administration as a flight instructor, dedicating his time to mentoring others in the skies.
