A Moment of Reflection Before the Finals
Prior to the puck drop for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Tuesday, June 2, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman addressed the media to commemorate the lives of two individuals who left a significant impact on the hockey community: former athlete Claude Lemieux and sports journalist Jessi Pierce.
Addressing the assembled press, Bettman, 74, emphasized the importance of remembering those who shaped the sport. "It’s appropriate to reflect on the people we’ve lost — those who thrilled us, and those who contributed to building the game we all love," he stated. "Tonight, I’d like to mention, in particular, two people: Claude Lemieux, and Jessi Pierce."
Remembering Claude Lemieux
Claude Lemieux, a formidable talent who secured four Stanley Cup titles throughout his 21-season career, passed away on May 28 at the age of 60. Reflecting on his legacy, Bettman praised his ability to perform under pressure.
«Claude Lemieux was one of the greatest big time game performers in the history of hockey. The Stanley Cup Final is where he shined the brightest. His flame extinguished far too soon last week. We are terribly saddened and we mourn his passing.»
Tribute to Jessi Pierce
The hockey world also mourned the loss of Jessi Pierce, a dedicated reporter who covered the Minnesota Wild for NHL.com for a decade. She and her three children tragically died in a house fire on March 21 at the age of 37. While the investigation into the fire continues, the White Bear Lake Fire Department has officially ruled out arson as a cause.
Bettman highlighted Pierce’s commitment to her craft, noting, "Jessi Pierce chronicled hockey with a professionalism and passion that could only come from somebody who truly cared for and adored the game. The tragic passing of Jessi and her three young [children] two months ago leaves a hole in our hearts and on our sport that cannot be filled."
Looking Ahead
The pre-game tributes served as a somber preamble to the Stanley Cup Finals series, which features a matchup between the Hurricanes and the Vegas Golden Knights.
